PoderiCellario - Bassissimo Orange

Poderi Cellario Bassissimo Orange is a vibrant, low-alcohol orange wine from the hills of Piedmont, Italy. Made from an unconventional blend of white grape varieties, Malvasia, Moscato, and Chardonnay, the wine is crafted to offer maximum drinkability with only 8.5% alcohol. The name Bassissimo translates as “very low,” a direct reference to its remarkably modest alcohol level. Despite its lightness, the wine displays impressive character, with aromas of citrus peel, white peach, apricot, orange blossom, and delicate floral notes. On the palate, it is fresh, juicy and energetic, with subtle tannins from skin contact lending texture and structure. The result is a bright, refreshing orange wine that balances fruit, acidity and gentle grip, making it equally suited to aperitif drinking or casual dining.

Bassissimo is the result of an innovative approach by Fausto and Cinzia Cellario, third-generation winemakers dedicated to preserving Piedmont’s natural winemaking traditions. The grapes are harvested earlier than usual to retain freshness and naturally lower sugar levels. Following harvest, the wine undergoes approximately 20 days of carbonic maceration, a technique that softens the naturally high acidity of the early-picked fruit while enhancing aromatic expression and texture. Skin contact during fermentation gives the wine its distinctive orange hue and subtle tannic structure. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, reflecting the winery’s low-intervention philosophy. The wine is bottled with minimal sulphur and without fining or filtration, preserving its authentic character and natural vibrancy.

Poderi Cellario is based in the village of Carrù, on the western edge of the Langhe in Piedmont. The family estate spans approximately 30 hectares across several vineyard sites located around Dogliani, Farigliano and Carrù, at elevations of around 400 metres above sea level. The vineyards are farmed organically, with all fruit harvested by hand and carefully selected in small crates. The Cellario family focuses on local Piedmontese varieties and sustainable viticulture, working in harmony with the environment to produce wines that genuinely reflect the Langhe landscape. Their philosophy centres on minimal intervention both in the vineyard and cellar, allowing the character of the grapes, soils and vintage to speak clearly through the finished wine.
